BTS at Cast in Colour – June & July

  • Aug 7, 2017

So I made a promise to myself to blog more, about life and business and everything in between.

This is what my life has looked like lately, all rugged up in a beautiful location with a camera in front of my face! I thought it might be fun to start blogging some behind the scenes from Martin and I shooting for Cast in Colour – our Melbourne based photography studio. At Cast in Colour we mostly shoot weddings and portraiture (couples, maternity, family etc), and soon we’d love to branch out into photographing for small businesses, creative concepts, brands and content creation! (So um, if you’re looking for some photos of yourself or your business, hit us up!) I know you’re kind of supposed to pick one ‘genre’ and stick to it, but wheres the fun in that? In almost nine years of shooting I photographed so many wonderful things, and I’d hate to put myself in a box just because it’s easier to market myself.

We started Cast in Colour in January of this year, and we’ve officially been business partners full-time for seven months! Where did the time go? Sometimes it feels like we’re so busy that we don’t stop and acknowledge how far we’ve come. So I’m taking a moment to give us a teeny pat on the back and feel proud that we’re doing what we love together full-time. Even though we’re still working things out, learning on the job, and by no means ‘rich’, we’re literally living our dream (and the dream of many other creatives) and I’m grateful for that every single day (and sleepless night). Who knew it would actually work out? When we were sitting in that cosy library late last year and we thought, ‘why wait?’. Just jump in feet first and see what happens. And here we are.

So what did we get up to in June and July? It was a pretty horrific winter, and as any on location or wedding photographer knows, winter can be tough. Bookings are scarce and the bookings you do have are subject to the elements. Over these two months we had two beautiful weddings (where we were blessed with amazing weather? thank you weather karma gods! still paying me back for some shockingly rainy weddings last year?), and a bunch of super fun and creative portrait shoots. I thought I’d share a little bit of a behind the scenes look into a few of these shoots, alongside some sneak peeks of the finished images. You can also keep an eye over at Cast in Colour to see the full albums once we get around to blogging them!

Our first shoot here is Kayleigh and Philemon’s super fun couple shoot up in the Dandenong ranges. Kayleigh and Phil are from Singapore and were visiting Melbourne during their travels of Australia! We connected on email months before their trip and continued to stay in touch planning and sharing inspirations images together. We had some really fun props and they even hired a mini cooper for the day! I brought along a picnic setup, planning the layout on our bedroom floor the night before (with pink lemonade and donuts).

(when that step ladder we keep in the boot comes in handy!)

Next up we have our first winter wedding of the year, Juliana and Russell’s sophisticated Prahran urban wedding. Here are a few of my favourites from our dusk-lit portrait session on the surrounding streets behind their venue, Prahran hall. We only had around 20-30 minutes to sneak these photos in before the sunset and we lost the last rays of light. We even popped into Russell’s favourite record shop to snap a quick loved-up photo!

Our second winter wedding of the year was the lovely Lauren and Berin’s wedding at the stunning Medley Hall. Big thank you to our friend and super talented celebrant Kim Mcclelland for connecting us with these two. It was such a dreamy, urban wedding, the most gorgeous interior at Medley Hall made for amazing ceremony shots. We explored the surrounding streets for their portrait session, and their reception was at the coolest Sake Bar in the city!

Winter sunshine in the city on our way to shoot a portrait session for a young composer/pianist.

And our last shoot of the month was with lovely Rhi and Mitchell in the colourful laneways in the CBD!

For a cold, wet and wintery season we had some pretty wonderful shoots and weddings (and mostly behaving weather!). Although I’m very much looking forward to counting down days until Spring… 😉 Bring on the sunshine and beautiful flowers!
