We welcomed the new year at Falls Festival Lorne with beautiful music and good vibes. I took two little plastic holga’s with me and shot five rolls of film! It felt strange to not have my dslr to capture all that I saw but it was also sort of nice to have my hands free. These pictures are a fun little photo diary of the weekend, I’ve fallen in love with the raw plastic-y feel of my little holga’s, the pictures seem to perfectly echo my memories.
early morning on the road
driving the great ocean road
we arrived at the festival site and set up our tent. by mid afternoon we were surrounded by a sea of campers
resting in our tent listening to the punters
the forrest out our window
sun setting over the festival
the cuban brothers were the first band we saw, the lead singer decided to get completely naked on stage! it was quite rowdy
some lovin’ in the audience
onesies were the most popular attire at the festival
night-time gymnastics in front of the main stage
we wake up bright and early on day two
the main stage in the festival grounds
sitting on the grass in the sunshine watching the first acts of the day
exploring the village and seeing our puppets
jess’s festival overalls that we decorated at art camp!
the parlour. they were face painting, decorating hair and bedazzling everyone!
the ice-cream van in the village
i was still perfecting my holga skills and sometimes didn’t quite judge the different heights in the viewfinder and the lens…
sunset over the camp site
seeing all the pretty vans made me wish my kombi van was still alive
the flaming lips put on a spectacular show with confetti and the lead singer floating around the crowd in a big blow-up ball!
oh and lots of balloons!
waking up for another day and staring at the roof of our tent
our camp site! it was wonderful having the room of a six man tent when last time we came to falls we only had a tiny two man!
people have all different flags to mark their campsite. one group even had a flag made of underwear
the bands and set times
young lovers
martin and i shared a slushie on the grass
costumes and strange hats
adelaide friends dressed as nuns!
the food was so so delicious. i was a little obsessed with the baked potato stall and i think i had three tropicana spuds in one day..
as soon as the sun set the air was ice cold. i dressed like an eskimo by night
new years eve morning martin and i sat on the hill drinking tea and coffee and reminiscing on two thousand and twelve
morning yoga in the village
my group met at the village to try on our costumes for the fiesta parade and organise some sort of formation
spaceship letters!
first aid kit were one of my favourites at the festival. they are both so beautiful
my handmade flower crown
jess’s pretty feet
at six o’clock everyone involved in the fiesta parade met outside the front of the village to get ready for the parade. we were so excited to finally see our hard work in action.
face painting for the parade
i painted Stephanie’s face and she painted mine!
waiting for the start of the parade
in my spaceship costume! little did i know that my ‘P’ wasn’t facing the right way…
and the parade begins. it was so so much fun and we were running around like crazy
drunk punters really seemed to enjoy it as we made our way through the camp grounds
mothership!
we took a short break as we entered the festival ground, it was time for us little spaceships to run to the top of the hill and spell out “happy birthday”, a celebration for falls festivals 20th birthday.
jess in her cute outfit!
the puppet we built at art camp finally came to life!
and we were finished! i never thought that dressing up in crazy costumes, pretending to be aliens from another planet and running in-between 16,000 people would be the highlight of my year, but it really really was.
and now it was time to party!
visiting friends campsites
everyone was extremely jolly and drunk by nightfall. strangely enough i didn’t have a drink all new years eve, i was having the best time and i’m not a big drinker anyway!
party hats!
cactus in the crowd
two door cinema club playing until the countdown
the best part was finding lucy by chance just before the countdown and welcoming the new year with my best friend by my side
DZ death rays with martin after the countdown
buying food in the early hours of the new year
in the morning i took a walk around the camp grounds as people were packing up and leaving. the grounds looked like a wasteland war-zone, i felt sorry for the volunteers who would spend their new years day cleaning up the mess
punters hungover and lining up to be breath tested
we packed up quickly, putting all of our rubbish into a cardboard box and making sure our campsite was tidy. we had to wait in an exit line for an hour without moving.
finally we were on the road
hanna squished into my little backseat
driving through the forrest on our way home, i was already feeling pangs of regret for leaving, take me back!
