I’ve fallen terribly behind with catching up on blogging our American adventure! Wisdom teeth surgery, birthday celebrations and packing up/moving out of our home has definitely been taking up all of my time! I’ve been shooting and working but neglecting blogging and I feel terrible for it. Finally now that we are officially on the road flitting between Melbourne, Adelaide and country Australia I feel like I have all the time in the world to concentrate on my pictures and this blog. No longer having physical belongings or a house to maintain means that all I have to worry about is my camera, my notebook, my small amount of possessions and the adventures that are to come!
Lets start where I left off with the next city on our America trip! Sunny San Francisco.
As we few into San Francisco I watched wide-eyed out of the window at the hazy fog engulfing the city. A colour pallet of pastel hues paint the horizon. We make it to our amazing penthouse AirBnb apartment and I watch the sun set and the fog roll in over the city.
Dusk crept in and we went adventuring through the city streets. San Francisco reminds me a little of Adelaide, the city is small and quaint, the buildings are old but immaculately kept. I was so impressed with their power saving bus system that runs on cables sort of like a tram! San Francisco feels like it’s leaps and bounds ahead with their efforts to help our earth.
I met up with the gorgeous and immensely talented Hana Haley of Honeyuck during my visit! We have been long time admirers of each others work and chatted back and forth online over the years. I was so excited to be spending the day with her while she gave me a tour of her neighbourhood and some of her favourite spots!
The best vegan ice cream EVER! A delicious strawberry and a creamy coconut underneath. Normally i’m not very impressed with dairy free ice creams and find myself wishing I could have the ‘real’ kind. But give me a tub of this delicious stuff and I’d be one happy lady!
Beautiful Hana enjoying her ice cream while we wander the sunny streets of the Mission District. Everywhere we went people were commenting how hot it was! I kept imaging their shock at our sweltering Australian summers and yet I didn’t know how to explain the Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion…. so telling someone we get days that are 45 degrees really wasn’t translating!
Street art that would put Brunswick in Melbourne to shame!
Exploring a quaint little antique store where I wanted to buy everything but knew that my backpack was already filled to the brim…
The houses of San Francisco are unlike any other I have ever seen before. They are painted in bright colours with beautiful awnings and shapes, some with flower themes others just a mismatch of colourful delight. It’s sort of like walking through streets lined with beautiful doll houses. Hana took me to see some of her favourites and I recognised a few from her pictures.
I caught the bus back into the city and I was struck by the colour pallet of the city, muted tones, soft pastel hues and a vintage tinge is apparent everywhere you look! Even the seats in the bus reminded me of a different era. California is warm and welcoming.
Another foggy sunset from the balcony.
We caught a train out into the countryside for the day and I couldn’t believe that the weather went from being a pleasant 25 degrees in San Fran to a very warm 38 degrees in the country! Sea breeze makes all the difference.
I went to my first Baseball game!
Exploring another neighbourhood on a lovely sunny day with Martin.
Making our way to the Golden Gate Park and eating our Wholefoods salad boxes on the lawn. Our original idea was to hire bikes to ride around but I am an extreme newbie when it comes to bike riding and I was much too intimidated by the idea of sharing the small path with so many other cyclists! Safe to say we chose to walk 😉
Another Squirrel! I wanted to make friends but he wasn’t very interested…
The park was huge! And really quite spectacular. It felt like a national park with lots of greenery, big hills, secluded dirt tracks, beautiful lakes and hidden forests.
We made it out of the park and jumped on the first bus that came by and took us all the way to the ocean.
On Hana’s recommendation we stopped by to explore Sutro Baths and the view was spectacular.
Another day, another adventure. We couldn’t stop by San Fran without seeing Lombard Street! We decided to spend the day seeing the typical tourist sites. One crazy thing about San Fran is that the city is incredibly hilly! I mean that one minute the ground is flat the the next you are climbing almost 90 degrees towards the sky! Lombard street was busy with tourists but we managed to climb the stairs and watch the cards zig and zag down the hill.
Peering into shop windows and admiring the adorable interiors.
With sore feet and tired muscles after a long day of walking, I was still determined to make it to the Golden Gate Bridge. After several buses and long waits, we made it, and it was so worth it. The sheer size is breathtaking, and the views are magnificent.
Final city views from the taxi window while we make our way to the airport. Sad to say goodbyes, but excited to explore the next city!
